The health effects of shisha smoking are not as well researched as cigarette smoking. However, a one-hour shisha smoking session involves inhaling up to 100 times the volume of smoke inhaled from a single cigarette.

A recent review of the research concluded that shisha smoking is as bad if not worse than cigarette smoking. It more than doubles the risk of lung cancer, respiratory diseases, low birth weight and oral diseases.
