Midwives in Newcastle are currently trained in brief advice to be able to support pregnant women, family members and friends to make an appropriate referral to the Newcastle Stop Smoking + Service and other areas in the region.

The stop smoking training that midwives receive is now part of their statutory training on a monthly basis. This means that they are better informed in helping pregnant women quit smoking and supporting them on their journey.

The Newcastle Stop Smoking+Service also works closely with midwives to develop marketing products such as a bookmark which is given to pregnant women to remind them of their quit journey.

Head over to our Smoking and Pregnancy page to find out more about how smoking affects pregnant women and their babies. If you’d like more in depth-support as a midwife, visit our Free Training Sessions page to learn more about how you can develop your understanding of smoking cessation.
